Reviews

In Mykaella's blog I learned about the hard journey that many immigrants had to make to be able to move to America. I was very surpised to learn that her father was an illegal immigrant. This blog post shows that it is possible to move to america and be successful in life.

Elsa's journal entry was really interseting to read. She wrote about a Japanese girl who move from Japan to Hawaii. This was very similar to mine because it talks about the hard journey and about the long distance. Its really realastic to a real journal entry,

In Keven's blog he posted an interseting video about todays immigrantion. It was very disturbing becuase the people were arguing and goning to use phyical violence to get their message across. I don't agree with that method because you should never use violence to solve a problem.

Arshad's blog was very interseting aswell. He wrote about the Irish immigration and how they were starving during the potato famine. They decieded to move to America for a better livestyle. They had very little rights and were discriminated against. This blog was good becasue it show the struggle and success of the Irish immigrants.

My Family Story

Over the years Puerto Rico has had alot of immigrants. The first immigrants of Puerto Rico were the Spaniards. The Spaniards took over Puerto Rico while the Taino indians already lived there. The Spaniards also forced the immigration of many African slaves to Puerto Rico. Due to all this immigration the Puertorican culture is very diverse.
My great grandmother Soledad Boyer was born in Zaragoza, Spain. She was the only daugther of my great great grandparents Juanita and Venancio Boyer. My great great grandmother immigrated to Puerto Rico in the early 1900s with my great grandmother Soledad. My great grandmother Soledad had blue eyes and her complecxion was light. She came to live in Bo. Pozuelo in Guayama. She married young and had 25 children and about 10 more that she adopted. In order to support such a large family she would iron clothes, sell fruits and vegetables. She was also the midwife of the neiborhood according to my grandmother.

Arizona and Illegal Immigration

http://www.reuters.com/article/2010/04/19/us-immigration-usa-arizona-idUSTRE63I6TU20100419

I believe that the law passed in Arizona is really wrong. I think that it's wrong to question someone just because they look latino. It's discrimination aganist not only mexicans but to all latinos. I still believe that immigration is a decision for a better life. All these illegal immigrants just want to have the american dream and to be successful. If americans are really that upset about illegal immigration than maybe they should go to the soucre of the problem. They should try to help these countries so that people can immigrate legally.

My Voyage

January 1, 1899

It's been hard in China for my family and I these past couple of months. My mother and father work all day and we still don't have enough food for all of us. See I live with my parents, grandparents, and two younger sisters. Now that I'm 12 years of age I have to work, which means I can't go to school. My father really wants me to go to school so he decided the only chioce is to move to America. I've heard about America before, they say it's the land of opportunities. I am really excited to go but my father said that he was going first so that everything would be ready when we went. I can't hardly wait!

March 17, 1889

Father left home about 5 weeks ago and has been sending us letters. He says that he has found a job working as a cook in a chinese resturant in a place called California. He also sent us money and that night ate like kings.Father also says that he is coming to get us soon. This made mother very nervous because we do not know how to speak english. She was also nervous about how the people were in America and how they would treat us. I'm nervous to go to America because I would be leaving my friends and family back in China. But over all I know that leaving is the best chioce...

Father came for us 2 weeks ago and we went directly to Hong Kong. In Hong Kong we went aboard a boat. We are still on that boat! Father said that it's a long way to America. My parents told me to be very carefull on the boat because if not I would get sick. I didn't understand way but many people got really sick. I'm really tired of being on this boat. There is alot of people and its really crowded. It's hard to be excited when all you see for months is the blue ocean. I hope we get there soon....

My family and I have finally arrived in America. But first we were kept in a place called Angel island. We were there for 2 months. My family and I didn't really understand what was going on because everyone was talking in english. Mother told me that we had to be interviewed first before entering America. It was really frustrating to be so close but yet so far away from our goals. After that horrible time in Angel island, my family and I made it to California. Now my sisters and I are going to school and my parents are working in a chinese resturant in chinatown. Life has become much better for my family and I. America really is the land of opportunities!

Chinese Immigration

Hard times calls for desperate measures, is the best way to describe the massive move of people to the United States during the 1800s and 1900s. Many people from varies countries like German, Itlay, Japan, China, etc. were immigrating to the U.S for a better life for them and thier families. During the gold rush of California many Chinese people immigrated to the U.S. During that time China was going through difficulties. Many people were staring and many people didn't go to school. Meaning many chinese people did not have the ability to read or write. To better thier lives and the lives of their families many of them decided to move to the U.S., the land of multiple opportunites.
Having the ambition to move to the United States was the easy part, it was getting there that was diffcult. It was very hard for the chinese at that time to get into the U.S. due to the Chinese Exclusin Act. This act prohibited the chinese to immigrate to the U.S. For most chinese immigrants it was nessasary to travel to Hong Kong first. Hong Kong is near coast, so from there the immigrants would go on a boat to America. The boat ride would take many months to get from China to America. During this boat trip many people would get sick and some would die. After the long boat trip the immigrants would be dropped off on an island located in the middle of the San Francisco called Angel island. In Angel island many Asian immigrants would be processed and inteviewed. This was very important because during this time it would be determined whether you would be granted entrance to the U.S or deported. Many chinese believed it to be very shamful to be sent back to China. Fortunately many chinese were able to enter the U.S.
Many or most chinese immigrants settled in California. Once in America the immigrants quickly realized that starting agian would be difficult. They would live in the same area as other chinese immigrants creating what we now know as "chinatowns.' Many different jobs were ocuppied by the chinese like cooks, pebblers and storekeepers. But during the 1850s most chinese man worked in gold minnig. While trying to rebulit their lives they faced alot of racial discrimination. For several years the chinese had been mistreated and harrased. Especially during the Naturalization Act of 1870, which prohibited chinese immigration.
In my opininon the chinese immigrants had alot of courage to travel halfway around the world to something they knew very little about. Its very honorable in my opinion to move to a new country to better thier lives and the lives of their families. The chinese immigrant worked hard and succeed even through the discrimination . I think that immigration is a good thing becaue it provides better lives for many people.
